As October closes, Nashville based band Badflower released a track, described as both creepy and spine-tingling, entitled Haunting You. The line"I'm still dead" from the beginning of the single introduces the idea that the song is from the perspective of a ghost that's haunting their ex-love that exiled them. You wouldn't imagine after finally pushing someone out of your life they could just come back around the haunt you, but this spooky-season hit might make you think twice before telling someone that they're dead to you.
"I miss the way that you touch me, baby I don't mean to bother your soul; but I'm still dead."
The songs echo-y and energetic yet chilling melody mixed with haunting lyrics makes for the perfect Halloween hit, or an every-day song for someone who feels like someone who's long out of their life is still watching their every move. Though the obvious thought might be to imagine the perspective of the person being haunted, Haunting You creates a fun spin by framing the feelings of the person that was pushed out of someone else's life very abruptly; in the from a ghost who took the phrase you're dead to me a little too literally.
As the song progresses, it's almost as if the haunting is getting more intense and harder to avoid by the person being haunted. Making it to the bridge, you get more of a sense of the intensity and dangers of the spirit. With lyrics such as "That's me, baby; in every bang you hear at the front door, and the scratches in the attic, and the creaking in the floor" it becomes clear that the ghost has attached itself to the soul of the person, and that they may never actually be rid of them after all; even pairing up with bone-chilling laughter which sets the scene that the ghost may be mocking their ex, who likely thought everything would be over after they were gone. The ghost, although dead, gets the last laugh.
"My soul is stuck on you; I'm only haunting you."
When asked about the single, Badflower frontman Josh Katz shared:
"'Haunting You' is really about being pushed out of someone's life abruptly and completely – like, when someone says, 'you're dead to me' and moves on. It's impossible to just forget about someone like that. Their presence lingers, and it can feel like you're being haunted by them or even judged by them when they're not there. I thought it was a fun concept to write from the perspective of a person that actually died – how that spirit might feel and what they would do.”
It's likely most people have been in a situation where they asked someone to leave their life, but with Katz's words taken into account, the song perfectly curates the concept of that person's spirit holding onto your soul and refusing to let go, even after death. With lyrics such as "Has someone been in your bedroom, honey? / Tell me, who's the motherfucker beneath you, baby? I'm about to step on his throat" you continue to imagine a scenario in which the haunted will never have peace again, even in private settings.
Though the track is a perfect fit for the season, it doesn't stray from Badflower's typical themes, which cover anything from sex to stress and sadness, making 'Haunting You' an incredible addition to their growing discography.
